Step one
Paint sticks to siding. It doesn't stick to algae.
Rolling a fresh coat over the right-hand side of that photo would look fine for one season and start peeling in the second. Every exterior job here starts with a wash, and the prep after it is what you're actually paying for.
- Pressure wash the whole envelope — chalk, dirt, algae and mildew off first
- Scrape and sand loose and failing paint back to a sound edge
- Spot-prime bare wood and any bleed-prone spots before the topcoat
- Caulk and seal the trim joints where water actually gets in
- Mask windows, roofing, walks and plantings before spraying or rolling
- Scheduled to the weather — exterior coatings need the right temperature to cure

Why exterior quotes vary so much.
Siding condition
Sound paint needs a wash and a coat. Widespread peeling, chalking or bare wood means scraping and priming hours before any colour goes up.
Height and access
A single-storey ranch is straightforward. Two storeys, steep grade, dormers or tight side yards mean ladders, staging and more time.
How much is trim
Body colour goes fast. Trim, fascia, soffit, shutters and railings are all hand work, and they're what actually drives the labour number.
Age of the house
Anything built before 1978 gets checked for prior lead-based coats and prepped accordingly. Older wood also drinks more primer.

What's the best time of year to paint an exterior in Michigan?
Most exterior paint needs daytime temperatures consistently above 50°F and dry conditions to cure properly, which in Southeast Michigan means late spring through early fall. September and October book up fast as people try to beat winter, so it's worth scheduling early.
How long does an exterior repaint last?
On a properly prepped house, a quality exterior coating generally holds up well past a decade on the body. Trim, fascia and south-facing walls weather faster because they take more water and sun. Prep is what decides the difference between five years and fifteen.
Do you pressure wash before painting?
Yes, on nearly every job. Paint bonds to clean siding, not to chalk, dirt or algae. Washing is included as prep, and we also do pressure washing on its own if that's all you need.
Can you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, with the right product. Vinyl expands and contracts more than wood, so it needs a coating formulated for it and a colour that isn't drastically darker than the original — too dark and the extra heat absorption can warp the panels. We'll tell you what's safe for your siding at the quote.
Do you paint the garage door and front door too?
Yes, and honestly they're the highest-impact part of most exterior jobs. A black garage door and fresh front door against clean siding changes the look of a house more than anything else per dollar spent.
What happens if it rains mid-job?
We stop and cover up. Paint applied onto wet siding or right before rain doesn't bond, and pushing through weather is how a repaint fails early. We schedule around the forecast and would rather add a day than take the risk.
